The writings in this book were not originally written with a book in mind. They emerged over many years from ordinary life—the joys and struggles of motherhood, unexpected conversations, small discoveries, moments of tenderness, and experiences that invited me to stop, notice, and reflect.
As my sons grew, I grew with them. Raising children was never simply a matter of teaching, guiding, or preparing them for life. Again and again, they became my teachers as well. Through loving them, worrying about them, letting go of them, and simply sharing life with them, I came to see myself, relationships, and life itself more deeply.
Some of these pieces were written when my sons were very young; others came much later. Read together across the years, they trace not only the story of two children growing into adulthood, but also the inner journey of a mother learning alongside them.
At its heart, Growing Together is about the ordinary moments that become extraordinary when we are present enough to see them. It is about the things we learn through loving another person, the ways relationships shape us, and the memories that remain long after the moments themselves have passed.
Originally gathered as a personal gift for my two sons, this collection is also an invitation to anyone who has loved, raised, accompanied, or grown alongside another human being—to pause, remember, and perhaps recognize something of their own story in these pages.
We do not simply raise our children. Somehow, in the process, we grow together.
